Khayelitsha Community Hockey Club which entered the annual hockey tournament for the first time, was crowned the champions in Langa on Monday.

Khayelitsha Community Hockey Club (KCHC) walked away with the trophy during the Langa and Friends Tournament which was held for the second time since its inception.

This win coincided with their 10th anniversary, to be celebrated later in the year, they said.

The senior team, which is the only team to participate in the tournament, was only formed last year.

Their wining spree started by beating a team from Belhar 4-0, they then played against a Langa team, drawing 2-2, their third game was against a team from Milnerton which they destroyed with 2-0 and their final game was against a team from Mandalay which they hammered with 2-1 victory.

Gloria Baartman, the coach for KCHC was jubilant after their win.

“We are new arrivals in the tournament, but we caused a storm. We are the champs. Our players enjoyed themselves in the tournament, in preparation for the season which starts on 09 April.

We have set our goals higher...we are going to collect every trophy this year. We want to be top achievers,” Baartman said.

The Langa team was crowned the champions last year.

Their rivals on the road to the finals are seasoned players in the league, having played many years ago teams that they played against having started playing in the league many years ago.

KCHC will be playing in the senior league for the first time this season and they claim that they are ready to make Khayelitsha “proud.”

Captain Phumlani Zumana said this (win) was an indelible moment for them.

“We are so excited for the win. We managed to overcome all the challenges that we have as a team. We lack some gear as a team, but that did not deter was encouraging for us and now we are aiming for winning the league this season. We want to take all the trophies,” Zumana said.

Baartman said they were always looking for new members to join the squad and extended an invitation to those interested in the sport, especially females, to come and join.

The team trains at the Khayelitsha Cricket Oval, behind Khayelitsha Swimming Pool, every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm.
