House robbing Avanza stopped

Nyanga police have spotted a trend of taxi drivers allegedly being hijacked by house robbers in the area.

According to police the two incidents were reported on Thursday last week where taxis were amaphela taxi were taken to commit house robberies.

“Members noticed through a mirror that a silver Toyota Avanza with no registration number stopped not so far from them. Suddenly the occupants came out running leaving the vehicle in motion after which it drove to a wall.

A chase ensued and one suspect was caught on top of a roof and one was found close by. Inside the car police recovered 3 flat screens, 3 remote controls, a speaker, four bags including a sling bag, passport and some documents,” said Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi.

She said that while the police were busy with the arrest at the station two men came and identified themselves as the owner and driver.

“The driver claimed he was hijacked by the suspects while driving in Gugulethu and the suspects instructed him to drive to Ottery area and went to a certain house and came out with the recovered items.

This is a second incident where Avanza drivers claim to have been hired by suspects to take them to an area where they commit house robberies,” she explained.

A 38-year old suspect was also arrested for a house robbery incident that took place in Ndibela Street in Browns Farm.

“The driver also claimed he was hired by the suspects of another area to transport them and their loot into and from Browns Farm. All these claims will form part of the investigation,” she said.

Suspects will appear in court.
