“We are in the community for the community,” said Khayelitsha Super Spar general manager Kokkie Crous when the store held its fourth year birthday celebrations at KCT Mall on Saturday.

Kokkie said since taking over the store in 2013 they have sought to be part of the community.

“We played a pivotal in the re-opening of victim-friendly room at the Lingelethu SAPS, there are countless schools and organisations that we have supported. It’s our way of giving back to the people who support our business,” he said.

Kokkie added as part of their birthday celebrations they “ran an amazing sale to really put something back into hand of the customer.”

“The economy is tough and we feel for our customers, by giving them relief we are meeting them half-way,” he said.

Store manager Calvin Muzondo said he was delighted with the response of customers to their birthday celebrations.

“We gave our spot prizes worth hundreds of thousands because we really love seeing customers happy. They are the backbone of this business,” said Calvin.

He added that a few gospel groups, top notch singers like Jongi and Sihlanu were hied to entertain shoppers on the day.

Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) chairperson Ndithini Tyhido congratulated the store for “serving the people of Khayelitsha with passion”.

“I commend the leadership of Kokkie, he understand the ethos of working in partnership with the community,” said Thyido.

Domestic worker and single mother of three children Nomzi Ntlwathi went home with a full smile after winning a state of the art microwave.

“It’ my first time to win something in life and I am very excited. My children will be very pleased with this,” she said.
