A group of artists named The Signatures have painted the second biggest mural in Khayelitsha, which took them three days to finish.

The five artists are Zizo Manona, Lwando Gibson, Yonela Kitise, Luvo Kwehla and Yanga Lingani.

In this particular project The Signatures were helped by another artist Lwando Mbetha.

Lingani said they decided to paint the mural in Makhaza because in Khayelitsha there are not a lot mural pieces.

“We only have one mural piece in Khayelitsha which is why we want to break that boundary because we have a lot of talent when it comes to art, we just lack resources and support,” he said.

Lingani said by doing this they are also encouraging and educating the youth about art and inspiring other artists to showcase their talents.

He added that the mural will be the second largest artwork in the area ofKhayelitsha.

Another member, Manona, said they are a group of multi-disciplinary artists and that they have various expertise in different disciplines.

“We consist of painters, photographers, graphic designers as well as fine artists and we pretty much cover a variety of art spectrums,” she said.

She said the projects they do involve commissioned art, murals, photo shoots as well as their own independent exhibitions creating artwork for the purpose of showcasing it in art galleries.

Manona said they plan one independent group exhibition every month and that they have exhibited at 6 Spin Street Gallery in Cape town, Youngblood Gallery and at Fugly Art Gallery in Khayelitsha.

“We usual approach galleries and rent out their space for a period of two weeks to a month,” she said.
