Joy on the faces of 13 parents of foundation phase learners at Intshayelelo Primary School in Khayelitsha was seen last week after they graduated from an eight-week Home School initiative. They received their certificates last week Friday.

The programme, aimed at empowering parents to academically support their children at home, is organised by Wordworks, a South African non governmental organisation that focusses on early language and literacy development in the first eight years of children’s lives. It started the initiative at the school three years ago.

Parent Khayakazi Timoty said she decided to join the programme because she wanted to help her children with their school work at home.

“I learned a lot of things from the programme like giving time to my child and having conversations with them in isiXhosa,” she said.

Timoty said her grade 1 child is now confident of speaking in front of people because of the skills she got from the programme.

Another parent Qondile Rasmeni said he wanted to help his child and other children’s education where he stays. He said after attending the programme and practicing what he learned he has seen a big difference in his children and other children in their area.

Facilitator Nosicelo Mahamba-Mplatyi said it is important for parents to be involved in their children’s education. She said the programme is meant to teach them how to support their children at home and make things easy for them.

Mahamba-Mplatyi said they also want to create a positive relationship between parents and the school.

She added that the number of parents that join the programme has grown which shows that there is interest in the good work they do.
