Invasion solution a communal one

– Continued from page 1.

Laker comprehends the need for housing and the tremendous change it brings to a family. “There’s no better investment from government than to give houses to people,” he said.

“I think we understand the need and desire. If people don’t understand what is happening to our piece of land, they can visit our offices [and we will enlighten them].

“It is not our intention to be in conflict with our neighbours, but we can’t allow people just to grab our land. We’re willing to challenge this and call security. Let’s create a two-week window period for discussing the land’s future.”

Laker believes housing should not be politicised, labelling the occupation as “unfortunate”.

“It should not have happened; there should have been proper communication between both parties, rather than having to sit here and unleash armed security to protect the land. There’s no winner; we just need to sit around a table.”

Asked about the price tag, Laker said Asla would sell the land for R50 million, adding it is on offer to interested parties.

But his concern is that there is not much available land left in the Helderberg.
