Peter Brandon is regarded as the first person to introduce Goju Kai Karate in the townships of Cape Town in 1968.

This year marks 50 years since that encounter.

Goju Kai recently held an inter-township seminar where students from Langa, Nyanga, Crossroads and Khayelitsha dojos trained in workshop led by the legend himself, Peter Brandon, Hanshi, 8th Dan Karate Master.

This seminar was held in order to assess the progress of students in all three dojos and to provide training for students preparing for the National Goju Kai Tournament to be held in August.

Frank Brandon, Chief Instructor and head of Western Province Goju Kai said he was very happy with the progress and growth of Goju Kai in the townships.

Buntu Mpetsheni is one of the top students, and a great role model and instructor and does a brilliant job ensuring that the students get the best training.

He instils the values and remarkable discipline of karate in all students from all four dojo’s in the townships.

Anathi Kalipa and Sipho Pokolo have been chosen to travel to Italy in July on a cultural exchange.

The City of Cape Town has endorsed this tour and the Mayor of Chioggia,Venice has personally invited the Goju Kais to perform two open air demonstrations.

Karate suits were handed out to all deserving students, who could not afford one.

Goju Kai enjoyed a day where all members spent quality time together.
