Western Cape Karate kids made the province proud over the weekend after coming back with a total of 24 medals from the Karate National Challenge.

The Western Cape Kuyu Kai took part in a Kuyu Kai National Challenge in Mpumalanga on Saturday 8 June, bringing home nine gold medals, eight silver medals and seven bronze medals.

The team is made up of members coming from Eyethu Dojo Karate Club, Thusong Dojo Club both from Khayelitsha and Zolani Centre Dojo from Nyanga.

Monwabisi Njomba, who is the trainer in Khayelitsha, said the tournament has grown from last year.

“There was a lot of competition this year but we managed to do well regardless,” he said. He said he is also very proud of his teammates because some of them who got medals were fighting for the first time and managed to bring something home.
