Vuyo Mbilana, owner of Vuyo’s Gym, based in Brown’s Farm in Philippi is appealing to business people to invest in his gym as it is on the verge of shutting down.

This was revealed during a special meeting held with his staff and members, to which City Vision was also invited.

He cited maintenance costs as the reason why the gym, fitted with the latest equipment, will not see life through.

The gym was opened about four months ago and has 150 members.

“My gym is in crisis. I brought it here because I wanted the community to have better training facility. I saw there was a need to open it for people to have high level of training facility but the problem is I don’t get enough support from the surrounding communities,” said Mbilana.

He said he tried to market it to all media platforms but there is little support from the community.

“If people are not coming that means I’ll struggle to pay rent and the landlord will evict me. I tried to market it and I even provide transport for people to take them home (after gym). We have free days training sessions. We also have free zumba dance classes on Saturdays,” he said but refused to disclose how much he is paying for the rent.

Mbilana said he charges individuals about R200 a month but is willing to decrease it by 30% if needs be.

“For children we charge R100 a month and R120 for groups likes soccer teams or church groups. The fitness promotes a healthy lifestyle because when you are overweight it can lead to a heart attack, stroke, diabetes and so on,” he added.

One of the gym members, Sonwabo Phillips from NY 112 in Gugulethu, said they are concerned by the demise of the gym as it is helpful to them.
