A first of its kind indoor hockey club, Khazaland Oaks was launched in Makhaza on Saturday 14 March.

Club director Ayabulela Ncoyo said their recreational activities through sport are building social cohesion and active citizenship while also raising awareness on pertinent youth issues.

He said both field hockey and indoor hockey are fascinating sports that one can barely find in townships.

“We want to make this sport dominant, attract private school bursary opportunities and produce provincial and national players from the township,” he said.

He said Impendulo Primary School was the first school in Khayelitsha to have a hockey field which was established in the early 2000s.

He said they have now introduced both forms of the game to three other primary schools in Makhaza.

He said the three schools are Inkazimlo Primary School, Noxolo Xauka Primary School and Masiphumelele Primary School.

Ncoyo said they have 125 children so far and that the response from the players has been amazing.
