Kids, return your overdue libary books

2019-05-30 06:01

City of Cape Town Libraries will host its first Fine-free Week for Children from Sunday 1 to Friday 7 June.

Previous fine-free events indicated that the most overdue items were children’s books, so the City’s Library and Information Services is initiating this drive specially on World Children’s Day (1 June).

At present, 2 025 items are outstanding among the 69 147 cardholders in the under-12 age group, the City says.

“We want our youngest library patrons to become lifelong readers, but this becomes more of a challenge when they don’t come to the library because of overdue books,” said Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health.

“By staying away they don’t benefit from any other programmes and opportunities that are offered by the library.”

The three most popular overdue books are Diere, David and Goliath and The Three Little Pigs, all stories that many children grew up with, he added, and which are loved across the generations.

“Parents can encourage their children to return the books and find new stories to develop their minds, imagination and language skills. Reading is not only a vital skill; it is also a fun way to learn.”

All 104 libraries of the City will participate in the event, and books can be returned to any facility.
