Nyanga police have warned residents to stop taking the law into their hands after the arrest of four alleged vigilantes in Crossroads.

On Friday, two men and two females were arrested in the area after allegedly kidnapping and assaulting to death a man accused of breaking in at a local clinic.

According to police, the victim was caught and was forced to point out where he had sold the contraband.

“Apparently the victim and accomplices had pointed out the houses to where they had sold the stolen items. Later, community members came to the suspect’s home looking for him but he was not available at the time.

They told his mother that if he does not bring his son they would chase her away from the area,” said spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi.

She said the mother later found out the whereabouts of her son and informed the community members.

“They went to fetch the victim at a relative’s home in Khayelitsha and brought him came back to Crossroads.

The community members allegedly dropped the mother and left with the son. The mother was then informed later by the community members where his son was.

When she came to the place, she found that he was badly assaulted and took him home and while she was preparing food for him, realised that he had succumbed to his injuries,” Sitshitshi explained.

She said that investigations led to the arrest of two females and a man on Friday, while the fourth suspect was nabbed during the weekend and his firearm was confiscated.

The suspects, aged between 35 and 47 appeared in the Athlone Magistrates Court, facing charges of kidnapping, murder and the fourth suspect will also face a charge of pointing of a firearm.
