Over 950 excited running enthusiasts gathered at the Mandela Park Stadium for the annual 5km Fun Run and 10km Run.

The WP Athletics-recognised 10km saw runners starting at the Mandela Park Stadium, turning at the Look Out Hill, running in front of the Khayelitsha District Hospital with the finish back at the the stadium.

The shorter 5km Fun Run, had participants running from the stadium , around the Apostle Church, and finishing back at the stadium.

The 10km race is endorsed by Western Province Athletics, one of its league races and was successfully hosted and organised by the Khayelitsha Athletics Club.

The winners in the 10km Men’s Race were:

1st Sibusiso Madikizela from the MSA Athletics Club in a time of 31 min 02 seconds

2nd Akhona Makila from the K-Way VOB AC in a time of 31 min 03 seconds.

3rd Vuyolwethu Mbukushe from RCS Gugulethu in a time of 31 min 19 seconds.

The winners in the 10km Women’s Race were:

1st Lee-shay Willemse whose club is not known in a time of 38 min 29 seconds

2nd Pamela Moyikwa from K-Way VOB in a time of 38 min 55 seconds

3rd Ebeth Marais from the Maties Athletics Club in a time of 39 min 01 seconds.

The turn-out at the race was great considering that there were other races taking place around Cape Town on the day and the weather was pleasant for a marathon.

The race was well organised as there were race marshals, traffic law enforcement visibility and gazebos for the registration area.

“Well done to the Khayelitsha Athletics Club for a well organised event. We enjoyed the 10km race and the support and atmosphere was inspiring!,”said Xolisa Qulu from Old Mutual which is one of the main sponsors of the race.

“A healthy and fit lifestyle is very important to me and it is just as important for the rest of the community ,” he said.

Also involved in the race was the Western Cape Liquor Authority (WCLA), Nonkqubela Boxer Superstore and Vodacom who landed support in various forms.

“We have identified the need to engage with the public through means of sponsorship. In this way it is easier to reach a wider audience and spread the word against irresponsible liquor consumption,” said WCLA’s Nwabisa Mapalala.

“ At Vodacom we want to get more involved in the communities we serve, be more accessible to our customers and support their community upliftment efforts and this was the ideal event for us to do so”, said Mandla Hlabisa, Senior Marketing Coordinator: Vodacom Western Region.

Khayelitsha AC spokeswoman Nomfundo Nkohla thanked all the clubs that participated and the sponsors that played a role.

“We want to make this race one of the exciting runs in the metro and we hope through experinces like of today we will get there,” she said.

Nkohla also thanked the volunteers who were marshalling the route, the traffic cops, the police and security for providing safety.
