For Imbasa primary school in Crossroads, what was meant to raise awareness about Arthritis, turned out to be the unveiling of the talents of a potential artist.

Ndumiso Msipha(16) walked away with the honours for his stunning drawing, which depicted the hands of feet of an arthritis sufferer.

The Arthritis Foundation hosted a drawing competition at schools around Nyanga, in which school children were asked to draw anything they know in relation to Arthritis, to test their awareness of the chronic condition.

Msipha chose to draw hands and feet.

“I am aware of Arthritis, hence I chose to draw hands and feet,” he said.

Msipha said he did not expect to win, but he is happy he did. He won a bicycle, which was the first prize and R2000 for his school.

“It is good to see that there are people who appreciate what I do out there,” he said.

The talented learner said he has no formal training but he practises at home with a paint, a pen and a pencil.

Msipha said he would love to take his drawing further, hopefully become a professional artist one day.

He said he was happy for the support and encouragement he receives from his family.

Thembeka Phike, his teacher, said “the learner is talented when it comes to drawing and we hope that he takes his talent further than it is now.”

Phike said they always encourage him to study further and be an artist in the future.
