Sinakho is a Western Cape based organisation that teaches sewing to unemployed people of all ages.

Supported by Nedbank and House of Monatic, Sinakho is at Guga S’thebe Centre in Langa.

Sinakho recently graduated the first 20 students. Two of them received full equipment to start their own businesses.

Proud founders Mary Nontuthuzelo Phahlane and Dr Mthobeli Guma attended the graduation ceremony. Also present on the day were teachers Thembeka Toleni, mother to famous crooner Ringo Madlingozi and Thobeka Mvumvu.

Phahlane said: “We teach our students that they don’t have to depend on someone(else), but have to start creating their own products and sell them.

“We’re situated in a tourist attraction area, and having one of our students show work to tourists has encouraged our current graduates to focus on their own businesses. We supply the resources.”

Bongiwe Mkhoba was selected to go on a three-month course with House of Monatic.

“I have started my own business now. I sew tights and sell them in the township. I’m excited that from the experience we receive here, they going to give us an opportunity to be in a factory and see how retail garments are produced,” said Mkhoba.

Wendy Nathan, a director of House of Monatic said: “The graduates will be given experience to work with industrial machines.

At the end of the project they will get an opportunity to join the factory,

“But if the students want to start their own things(business), they are also welcome to do so.”

As part of the Nedbank winter campaign, blankets are donated. But this year they want people to create their own blankets and start their own business. Nkosinathi Msiza said: “It’s better to be an entrepreneur than wait for a job. Start your own business,”
