Langa needs to be redeemed from the shackles of self-hate

The story (Young Zozo’ gone to soon, City Vision 11 May 2017) refers.

It was about the demise of young Zozo Martin who lost his life allegedly at the hands of his friend.

It was a touching and moving tribute, but what drew my attention was the line: “Previously known as tight-knit community” in reference to Langa.

And the question that begs an answer is what went wrong in Langa.

Langa used to be a place of pride. Not anymore.

Some blame it on the evil spirits, while others blame it on so-called outsiders, and for some it is the abanxusi, who bring all the trouble.

Today Langa teems with gangsters, car-hijackings are the order of the day, gun-shots have become so frequent nobody pays attention to them or they no longer sends shock waves through the community.

Haters have grown in numbers. Do we then blame this on the evil spirits, or is it a lack of spiritual fulfilment.

There are a lot of churches around Langa today, apart from the old traditional Anglican or Methodist denominations. But why then is there so much hatred amongst people.

I have chosen to build a thick wall around me for fear of being hurt and thereby causing distress to my soul.

I would rather not hear about the evil stuff going on around this place, so my commune has become a safe haven for me.

People take each other for granted, they hurt each other intentionally, they date each other’s partners and tell you off with a straight face.

Although I come from a religious family, I’m not pious because I have come to learn that being spiritual is more decent than being religious.

Spiritual people have one-on-ones with the self on a daily basis and are not hung up on some “building” and a “pastor”.

They know where they draw their strength from, and if you happen to be lucky to be in their space, you will often get a bone or two to chew on.

Hypocrites are breeding hypocrites in this area today. It is not strange to find a parents fighting over a child’s wrong-doing.

I come from an era where a parent could scold you. Today, it’s a case of “not owam umntwana”.

People need to seriously consider having a conversation with God. One does not need to attend church every day, or every Sunday to show how committed their hearts are to do good.

One just needs to do self-introspection and ask: “What good or what is my purpose in this world,”.

We have made mistakes we are not proud of, however, we cannot hold on to the past because it will diminish chances of growth as a person.

We need to be cognizant of the fact that the past is for our lessons and do not make us who we are.

The Now is what matters and what we should always strive is to make a difference.

Tomorrow my dear brothers and sisters was never promised and still is not.

I am now reminded of R.Kelly’s song and would like you to all live by these words in order to create a safe and healthy environment amongst each other.

“Love God, Love yourself… Love one another…no matter what the colour.

Stop that hatred and negativity… Love your neighbour, set the powers that be!

Respect that woman… Respect that man!... You’re going through something… Don’t take it out on me… Just ask God to fix it and Be Happy”.

It goes on and on. A powerful message right there.
