Law should listen to all sides

2017-07-20 06:01

Under no circumstance would I protect an abuser or perpetrator.

Currently we are facing a situation where our sisters, mothers and daughters are being abused, by people who are supposed to protect them.

Society lives in fear, and life is not a bed of roses.

Something bugs me when it comes the court of public opinion(social media) and Roman Dutch Law.

Law, in its sense is supposed to be fair and equal to all, as contained in our constitution.

However, whenever we hear there has been another woman beaten up by their partner, we never hear the real reason or the merits of the case. All cases are treated the same.

Headlines scream: “Monster beats wife. Monster should go to jail for life. No bail for abusive monster. Monster must not set foot in neighbourhood again!

I agree with all the sentiments 100%. But the reality is that the story of the perpetrator does not get to be heard.

Every case is covered with the same blanket. To me the reason we are not wining the battle of abuse is that we are not willing to listen and do a proper research. I wish I can make an example about the case of Karabo. And ask how much do we know about the accused?

We’re failing to ask the critical questions: why did he do it? What triggered his behaviour?

These questions will help us a great deal as society and the courts of law to formulate appropriate measures when dealing with such offences.

Everyone needs to have their story heard no matter how bad or worse it is.
