Leaders flee in fear

Sporadic attacks on people working on the development of Sweet Home informal settlement, in Philippi, have prompted community leaders to flee the area.

The informal settlement has been on a knife-edge for nearly two years with attacks on construction workers and squabbles for leadership positions.

At least five people, including two security guards and a grader driver, have been killed in less than a year.

The latest incident happened last week, with the killing of two law enforcement officers. They were both shot in the head on Wednesday 4 September.

In a statement mayor Dan Plato condemned the killing of the law enforcement officers.

He said they were protecting a City contractor that was delivering City services. “I wish to express my sincerest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the two officers. They were airlifted to hospital where they both since passed,” he said.

Plato said the City will assist the police in leaving no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators to justice so they can answer for their cowardly deeds.
