Lwazi Primary School learners in Gugulethu celebrated the closure of Woman’s Month by letting their fingers do the talking by drawing the faces of their female teachers.
Though the drawings were not the exact replicas of the lady teacher’s faces it was an effort that “warmed up many hearts”, according to Weziwe Buti, organiser of the event.
“It was a token of appreciation from these children and we were all happy to see their attempts,” she said.
Buti said they asked Grade seven learners to draw a picture of their “favourite teacher” to be inscribed with a message.
“It was amazing because the children managed to capture the essence of their favourite teacher by the use of unique colours and quotations,” she said.
Deputy Principal Thandi Mbekeni was full of praise for the efforts of the children to display their love and appreciation for the educators.
She said she was overwhelmed by the creativity of the kids to show prowess at a young age and for displaying a clear understanding of what Woman’s Month meant to them.
Mbekeni turned her focus on her colleagues, urging them to become role models to their charges.
“These children look up to you. The effort they put into drawing your faces shows they are really touched by your presence in these classrooms,” she said.
She also urged the women to support and appreciate one another.
“As women we need to keep the light burning in the education fraternity ...”
