Learners from Nomlinganiselo Primary School took part in this year’s Danone Nations Cup in Spain. The u.12 soccer team from the New Crossroads-based school arrived to a hero’s welcome on Tuesday 15 October. They were welcomed by the residents at Mkhanyiseli Primary School from the airport before a parade to their school. The tournament is the world’s largest soccer tournament for players between the ages of 10 to 12 and has been taking place since 2000.Despite not going all the way to win the competition the young boys came home with medals for the Fifa Fair Play. Coach Chris Njokwana said the boys were confident going into the tournament because they had won everything at home. “When they got there they suffered from stage fright because they were playing at one of the biggest stadiums in the world,” he said. Njokwana said his team, which plays in school tournaments, came up against players that play for academies affiliated to some of the world’s biggest clubs. He said they were also disadvantaged by their physique. “They are small and played against big players,” he said.
