Tembaletu School learners and teachers exchanged pleasantries on Heritage Day, Monday.The school, in Gugulethu, caters for learners with special educational needs, saw learners dancing for their teachers, whilst the teachers reciprocated by cooking sumptuous traditional meals like umngqusho and tripe.Fun was had by all. Dance, music and poetry and theni sitting down for the meal was the order of the day.Whatever the inhibition and challenges were forgotten on Friday, with teachers and learners having fun. They were all dressed in traditional attire to coincide with the celebrations. Principal Ayanda Mtshazo said they marked the day annually, to equip learners with information about their cultures and background.“Although our learners are disabled, they also need to know their history, traditions, culture and heritage, which is why we celebrate Heritage Day with them,” he said.Mtshazo said by knowing their heritage, they will be able to pass it on to their own children. He said such celebrations gave learners an opportunity to practically do what they learn in class. He praised the government for putting the day in the country’s calender. Grade nine learner Khanya Ludidi,16, had written and performed a poem called Embo.
