“Business is everybody’s ambition, but once in, one soon realises it is not an easy task to maintain, as it needs perseverance and dedication.”

These are the words of Wellington Chara, 23, a young entrepreneur who manufactures leather hand bags, belts and wallets, and based at LookOut Hill, in Litha Park.

His father, established the Clever Leather Company two decades ago, he says.

Chara and his older brother Carlington, both run the business after their father, Clever Chara, went on retirement.

He said they specialise in Kudu, Buffalo and Springbok leather materials.

“My father started the company in 1998, working from a rented house in A section, Site C. After his(father) retirement, Carlington my older brother, took over in 2014 and moved to Lookout Hill because there was not enough space in the house,” said Chara.

He said he joined his brother two years ago.

“I trained myself on how to do all the things. I used to watch when my brother is working. Then I started sewing bit by bit, till I mastered the art of turning leather,” he said.

Chara said they sell their staff on the free market.

“Most of the time we sell in stock price because we do orders. We also visit free markets like the Grahamstown Festival, Macufe in Bloemfontein. We also supply small businesses in Cape Town. We do have customers in Durban, Eastern Cape, Knysna and George,” he said.

However, he stated that the competition is tough because of growth in the industry.

“We also do ostrich and crocodile leather bags but because the skins are too expensive, we only do orders,” said Chara.

Their prices range between R200 and R12 00. Chara said the business is at its best during the summer season.

“Last January, one customer put an order and paid for about 200 of our bags ... I couldn’t believe it.”
