Khayelitsha mall visitors and shoppers were treated to a day of learning and discovery on Saturday; thanks to Iziko Mobile Museum.

Both young and old were presented with the opportunity to explore the wonders of the museum in their own backyard.

Educational talks were given on the various animal species, coupled with recreational arts and crafts for the kids.

The KCT Mall has embraced a new way to engage with the community through the use of its functional space.

According to Mkhululi Gaula of the KCT Trust, they were committed to creating opportunities for shoppers for a unique, uplifting and educational experience.

“This is to also create the experiences and moments that were once deemed out of reach for township dwellers.

“Our commitment is to transcend infrastructure development,” Gaula said.

He is the CEO of the Khayelitsha Community Trust (KCT).

“Ensuring that empowering knowledge is imparted to members of our community is something that we encourage greatly.

Sithembele Harams , an Iziko Museums Community Outreach Specialist said: “As an organization, it is important for us to make sure that everybody gets access to the knowledge that we have to share,”.

“Whenever we go into the community we see just how important our role is... Today the young and old have left our mobile museum feeling empowered and inspired,” he said.

For the coming months, visitors to the mall should expect the growth of KCT Mall from a space where shoppers can go to get the greatest in deals and the creation of edutainment space where shoppers and visitors can be empowered, educated and enlightened through various programs.

In partnership with Khayelitsha’s Dumile Brand Boutique, shoppers are in for a treat.

Sibulele Siko-Shosha, the founder and creative director, feels very strongly about giving back to the community that shaped her: “As a marketing agency founded in Khayelitsha, handling the mall’s marketing was a great achievement for us,” says Siko-Shosha.

“Our focus is ensuring that the people of Khayelitsha and shoppers at KCT Mall are given the opportunity to experience moments that are new, exciting and previously perceived as being inaccessible.

KCT Mall shoppers can look forward to a battle of the DJs at the end of May, where the winner gets cash prizes.
