What can we learn from Mandela?

There is something that losers do not understand. They do not understand that they are blessed. It is like a rich man that leaves his home to seek for wealth elsewhere, while it is right where he is.

Are you blessed? I guess you are. If you are a South African, you are.

But you do not see it. You reckon you are not. And you are looking for it elsewhere, while it is right in front of you.

Let me explain. When Mandela was in prison, he realized one thing. He realized that to understand the Boers, you got to know how they think.

What makes them tick? You know what does?

It is their culture. It is their language. It is who they are. So what did Madiba and his comrades do? They went back to the basics. They studied their history. They read their language.

While kids of Soweto said, “Away with Afrikaans!” they learnt how to speak it. You think I’m kidding? Read his autobiography. You will find it all there. They learnt how to think like them.

It may not have been nice. You have to understand some were still bitter. They were incarcerated for nothing except their beliefs. Why should they learn about them? Why can’t they learn about them?

You know, the other way round. But it was them who did. It shows the calibre of those men.

They were visionaries. They were intelligent.

And they were smart. They thought ahead.

And because of that, it paid off. The prison guards came to terms with them. It wasn’t easy. But a breakthrough was made. And these people came to realize these political prisoners were not what they thought they were.

They were something else. I don’t know exactly. But they did not want to throw them in the sea. Then the young ones took over. And talked about two nations. Tension resumed.

I don’t think it is gone. I hear it all the time. It makes me sick.

And I’m thinking; why can’t we be friends? Simple. Why can’t we work together? And who is to start it? We. We got to take the first step and emulate Mandela.

You got to understand these people. What do they like? What do they talk about? I venture to say they like ideas. I venture to say they like a person with good business ideas.

Not all. But there are that do. And they can help. I hope. The things we talk about scare them off. They reckon we want to take what they have. How about telling them we have ideas? And let’s see what happens. Stay positive.
