Road runners and athletes are invited to join legions of other local athletes for a running race through one of the Mother City’s most vibrant townships.

Start limbering up the legs and warming up the muscles for the seventh annual Dave Spence Memorial Run organised by the RCS Gugulethu Athletics Club for Friday June 16.

Club chairman Thobile Ndzube said he was thrilled with the preparations and was expecting runners from all corners of the Peninsula to “come and enjoy Gugs”.

The race is held in commemoration of the life of one of Cape Town’s local athletics and long distance running coaches. The foot race invites participants to trot through the vibrant township of Gugulethu as part of either the 10-km jog or a short 4.2-km fun run.

The longer race will take runners past local landmarks like the Gugulethu Mall and Nyanga Junction, and on to Manenberg, which was separated from Gugs under the Group Areas Act during Apartheid, before heading back to the NY49 Stadium, where both races started.

Those taking part in the fun run will be meandering through the streets of nearby neighbourhoods, and they can no doubt expect to be cheered and egged on by residents. Whether you’re keen to take on a 10k or would rather take it easy with a fun run, you can join in the festivities knowing you are running an excellent cause.
