Library sets eyes on luring youth

The Langa Library Indaba, held two weeks ago, was for the purpose of giving light on the activities of the library.

Friends of the library, after a brainstorming session, came up with solutions on how to offer better services and engage with the community at large.

During the meeting, it transpired that a vast majority of Langa residents do not make use of the facility, or that most do not know of its existence, let alone the services it offered.

For a community that has its fair shares of social anomalies, it was shared that most people know more about the location of the police station than the library, although the first is just around the corner.

The library should be the custodian of information in the community in which it operates.

The library has in its inventory books, internet space, dvds, music and films, and space for reading quietly.

Litha Nyhonyha, a local businessman, is one of the friends of the Langa Library.

He donates books and newspapers to the facility, thus making it one of the few that relies solely on the City of Cape Town for funding.

The Indaba resolved that measures have to be found to entice more young readers to the library’s cubicles.

Geoff Mamputa, one of the participants said: “We need to develop a culture of reading that leads to excellence,”
