Siyavuselela Sports and Life Skills organization held their school programs at Mseki Primary School in Gugulethu last Friday to educate learners on how to take good choices and boost their self-elsteem.

The organization, which is based in Gugulethu, is working together with eight other primary schools in the area.

Anele Magqwaka, founder of Siyavuselela Sports and Life Skills, said their aim was to teach learners to make good decision in life.

“We have a program called ‘it’s cool to be me’, which is about choices. We encourage learners not to be influenced by peers.

In our communities, we have challenges of drugs, gangsterism and alcohol abuse.

We also have physical education where we train them sport because we believe that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind,” he said.

Vatra Kwezi, one of the facilitators said their aim is to encourage learners to believe in themselves.

“We teach life skills during school hours (8am to 3pm) and do physical education after school (3pm to 4pm).

We are trying to assist the government in the fight against drop-outs in primary schools,” he said.

Kwezi added that some children face abuse by step-fathers and other problems.

Grade 7 learner Siphosethu Makalima,13, said the life skills programs helped build self-esteem and to be bold enough to face challenges.

The life skills taught us to make good choices even if we make friends, we must first check what kind of person he or she is. Because whatever we are doing now will influence our tomorrow,” said Makalima. She advised her peers to listen to their parents than their friends.
