Renowned Khayelitsha actor Lunga Nogqala is taking the entertainment industry by storm and putting his area on the map.

Nogqala, who resides in U-Section in Site B, plays the character of Mzu in the drama series Nkululeko on Dstv’s Mzantsi Magic.

The drama which started on television early this year(January 7) is shot on location in Khayelitsha.

He has also played in various sitcoms last year, including Ezibiweyo as Akhona and Ilifa as Andile, both on Mzantsi Magic.

The soft spoken Nogqala said his intention is to change the false perception that people have about Khayelitsha.

“I want people to know that there are good people and nice places in Khayelitsha. People must stop judging us as if we are all criminals. They must stop painting us with the same brush,” he pleaded. Nogqala said he started his career at Manyanani Entertainment group in Site B.

“I started performing locally in 2003 as a dancer and I developed an interest in acting after watching drama and theatre,” he said

He disputed the myth that if anyone in the industry wants to be successful, they must relocate to Johannesburg, saying that people just need to change their mindset.

“All that Gauteng has, we also have here in the province. To me, it is all about a passion for what you are doing.

He is pleading with the Department of Arts and Culture to come on board and assist young artists in the townships. There is a lot of raw talent that needs to be polished in khayelitsha,” said Nogqala.

He said he never thought that he could share stage with renowned actors like Tina Jaxa, Jet Novuka and Chris Gxalaba. However, he described Warren Masemola and Israel Matseke as his role model.
