‘Litsha cyclist given the boost

Last Wedensday, Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy members in Khayelitsha were on cloud nine after top South African cyclist Willie Smit donated three bicycles and full kit through his sponsorship Alpecin, in an effort to encourage the youth to focus on sport and also develop it in the community.

Alpecin is a German company which produces Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo, a product used against hair loss.

Velokhaya communications officer Shaun Doch said the event is about uplifting and empowering the academy.

Doch said Alpecin will be creating an awareness campaign and fundraising internationally for the academy.

“As part of fundraising for the academy Smit will ensure that each international event is participating on will inform other cyclists about Velokhaya and what we are doing. And also asking for donations,” he said.

According to the statement, the 2017 African Continental Champion top South African cyclist Smit has just signed for a second year on the Union Cycliste Internationale’s Professional World Tour with Team Katusha Alpecin.

He encouraged the youth not to give up and to fight to achieve their dreams.

Smit will be racing with New Season 2019 team, presentation, Koblenz Canyon Home in Germany this coming Sunday.

The renowned Khayelitsha cyclists Luthando Kaka, who started cycling at Velokhaya more than a decade ago, described the academy as a stepping stone for the young riders in the area of Khayelitsha.

He said they are also assisting riders academically.

“Other children who can’t ride bikes, we also assist them with their studies.

There are about 150 kids that are active in Velokhaya, which we are assisting and some of them we are even paying their school fees,” he stated.

The event was appreciated by all.
