Two young men from Khayelitsha have been selected to be part of the eight member Kinetic Pro Cycling team.

The team provides the opportunity for aspiring young cyclists from historically disadvantaged backgrounds to race professionally at the highest level in the country and internationally.

Vuyo Mavuya (22) and Vuyolwethu Nkomo (18) are products of the Sports Trust Development Programme, which runs the cycling programme.

Mavuya has recently won King of the Mountain race at the WeBenefit99er Cycle Tour in Durbanville earlier this month.

The tour is the third largest race in the Western Cape and is a favourite on the cycling calendar.

He said he felt good about winning the race because he worked hard at it.

Mavuya said he is looking forward to taking part once more in the Cape Town Cycle Tour which starts next month.

“I have raced it before but I have been having a bit of bad luck by having punctures so hopefully this year I will do better,” he said.

Nkomo who is a Grade 12 learner at Matthew Goniwe High School said now that he has been selected for the Kinetic Pro Cycling Team, he tells himself that nothing can stop him.

“I love cycling and I’m doing well at school, I train hard every day and then do my homework,” he said. He said when he finishes school he wants to continue with his studies and cycle professionally.
