With only seven designers on show for the inaugural Khayelitsha Fashion Week (KFW), the event has gained a lot in popularity over the last two years.

That was evident one Saturday recently, when 15 designers from around the metro gathered at Isivivana Hall to showcase their creations.

Event organiser Bongani Matenjwa said they started with seven designers in 2016.

“When we started, we only had seven designers who took part and this year we have grown to 15,” he said.

He said the event was designed to give fashion designers and models an opportunity to showcase their designs and talents.

He said they hoped to develop, expose and prepare local designers for bigger platforms.

Matenjwa said they also taught upcoming designers ways to identify potential clients, and develop content marketing strategies.

He said not every designer showcased their designs on the ramp, but others did so by way of putting up stalls selling their products.

Matenjwa said the community of Khayelitsha did not grasp the fashion week concept at first.

However, they had since warmed up to the idea and has since been well supported. He said organising the annual event came with its own challenges.

“Our biggest challenge so far is funding,” he said.

“Putting the event together digs deep in one’s pocket, but we will not stop because of that. We will continue.”

He said some designers who started with them were now on bigger walkways.

“This year’s event was a huge success from our side, because we had mixed designers and audiences from other areas and we hope to be even bigger next year.”
