Soccer fans in New Crossroads enjoyed the Street Champs Tournament spectacle held at Nceba Park last Wednesday, wherein about nine local teams participated, in an event organised by Gugs United Organisation, as an effort to fight crime in the area.

Barcelona FC won in the tournament, beating Napoli FC 5-2, thus walking away with a trophy.

Gugs United Organisation is an umbrella body for all the non-governmental-organisations working with youth to quell crime in the area.

Lucky Tyokwana, the winning coach, said the event was great for the youth.

He said the aim is to keep the youth busy, particulary those who are unemployed.

“Sometimes, when they sitt in the street corners doing nothing, it is easy for them to commit crime, because they have nothing to do,”he said.

Tyokwana said the project works because the number of participants increased gradually. He said they intend to make the event bigger and lure other areas to join in.

Gugs United, Safe Community Coordinator Nosipho Waqu said they started the project early this year as a pilot project.

“We have various activities that we are doing as an organisation for unemployed youth, like arts and culture, karate, soccer and life skills. We want to keep them busy and stop sitting on street corners,” said Waqu.

She said they hold the tournament every Wednesday, either at the Nceba Park or Elukhanyisweni Community Centre in Gugulethu’s NY 74. Waqu also complained bitterly about the absence of parental support.

“We need parents to be involved in their children’s life. We want them to know what their children are doing.”
