Two rising stars from Khayelitsha have taken the giant leap to become household names in the music industry after receiving nominations in the 16th Metro FM Music Awards.

Kuyasa music producer and DJ Sanele “Mizz” Wili has been nominated in the best remix category for his rendition of Bob Ezy’s Close To You.

Khayelitsha’s Afro pop duo Soul Kulture has been nominated in three categories Best New Comer, Best Afro pop and Best Group.

This will be the first time that artists from Khayelitsha have been nominated and Mizz believes that it is the start of great things to come.

“This means that we are as local artists going into the right direction and it feels great. I’m excited because this is my first time getting a nomination for an award. I’m happy that the song is also on my debut album so at least it says I’m doing something right,” said Mizz.

Aseletsi Manamathela and Msekeli Velaphi of Soul Kulture began their music career as Igadi Yobomi performing at taxi ranks and train stations in Khayelitsha.

Their fortunes have changed since they were discovered and went on to sign with Jo'burg based label Open Mic Productions.

The due produced a 14 track album with mega Afro Pop producer Mojalefa Mjakes Thebe. This album is title Ngelinye iLanga which is the song that has garnered them national fame.

“It has been such an unbelievable journey for us and we have enjoyed every moment. We are very happy to be nominated in three categories. We would like to thank our supporters and would like to assure them that just because they don’t see us anymore we still value them and we need their support,” said Manamathela.

Mizz also reiterated the importance of local supporters for artists in the music industry. “We are grateful for the support that we receive from locals and we hope that they will keep supporting us and the others that are up and coming,” he added.

The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, the 25th February 2017 at the iNkosi Albert Luthuli CC) in Durban.
