A night vigil has been organised in honour of the late Winnie Nomzamo Madikizela-Mandela at the Look Out Hill in Khayelitsha for Friday night.

Organised by Mhonko Foundation, Project Uluvo and Women With Intergrity (WWI), the programme will see speakers like MEC of Health Nomafrench Mbombo, human trafficking survivor Grizelda Grootbom and other notable personalities taking to the podium.

Mhonke Godze said the vigil will honour Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and talk to her persevering legacy.

“Mama never lost hope in times of darkness and heavy oppression. We want young people to learn from her courage so that they can emulate her,” said Mhonko.

She said she hoped that the vigil and burial of Mama Winnie will unleash the spirit of human sacrifice for young ones.

“They must rise and say #IamWinnie# and therefore I must make a difference in society,” she added.

The vigil will start at 6pm and people are urged to come wearing black clothing as a sign of respect for the dead and bring their own candles.

“This will be a candle-light ceremony at the hill,” she said.

Project Uluvo founder Kholekile Mwahla said it was a sad moment for the nation but called on “everyone to celebrate Mama’s life by taking a leaf out of it.”

“A giant has fallen, let’s take the spear and move on,” he said,
