Looking back at the season that was

2018-05-17 06:01

Now that the Premier Soccer League season is over one can look back at how the clubs performed. Yes, the season has been long as usual.

We have seen the hot and cold performances of the previously glamorous clubs.

We have seen the diehard supporters sticking to their clubs even though they were performing below par.

Eish, people, soccer is not what it used to be, seriously.

If we were to talk about one stress causer in our lives, if taken seriously, then soccer in Mzantsi would rate one of the highest.

Maybe that is the reason most men frequent the watering holes, as a way of de-stressing from the beautiful game.

One day you would be praising your club for an excellent performance, then the very next day they play hogwash.

I keep wondering if it may be that way because soccer is now a profession and players only perform to stay afloat. There is no longer a love for the sport.

I reckon clubs should now introduce pay per performance – perhaps that way the standard of our soccer would change. Or, maybe we would get players with surnames or names that are relevant. You know, in the old days, by a mere mention of a name or surname you knew there would be fireworks.

Now the names have no bearing and are just simple – no nicknames – and even the ones who have nicknames are less venomous.

Well, as I said at the beginning, the season came and went, and congratulations to the champions, Sundowns.

Also, congratulations to Orlando Pirates, in second place, and Kaizer Chiefs for getting rid of Steve Khompela.

Yes, the writing was always on the wall for this son of the soil.

I hope Chiefs will now go and buy good, quality players and leave the buy-one-get-one-from-our-neighbouring-country trend behind.
