Khayelitsha baritone Ntando Ngcume was chosen to perform at the 45th annual Western Cape Youth Music Festival at Artscape Theatre last Friday.

This prestigious annual event offers accomplished musicians the opportunity of playing with a symphony orchestra on a professional concert stage.

He shared the stage with 11 other young musicians from the Western Cape who will be performing alongside the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra when he is set to sing: “Hai Gia Vinta…” from La Nozze di Figaro.

Ntando is currently a student at the South African College of Music’s UCT Opera School.

He started performing in South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) competitions as a choir member of Luhlaza High School Choir.

As a soloist, he has received numerous awards and was a finalist in Planet Boom’s Got Talent Competition. Ntando has performed in several collaborations with UCT and the Cape Town Opera as a chorus member, namely Il viaggio a Reims, La Traviata, The Flying Dutchman, The Application, Bessy, Blood of Mine and The Marriage of Figaro under the baton of Maestro Kamal Khan.

He has participated in concerts hosted by George Stevens and as chorus member in Pretty Yende’s recital at the Baxter Concert Hall.

This year Ntando will appear in Cosi fan tutte as Gugliemo and as the First Priest in The Magic Flute with the UCT Opera School.
