Lunga Adam’s gay hate crusade to be curtailed

2017-06-29 06:01

Lunga Adam’s column On The Run(“…A man who sleeps with a man deserves high respect.”, 15th June 2017) refers.

The article shows a great depth of homophobia.

My letter is written on behalf of the queer community of Langa, Gugulethu and Nyanga.

For the benefit of our complaint, allow me to dissect the article for your indulgence.

First, Adam tells us of a story that was relayed to him by a colleague on a night out.

He says: “Instead of being overcome by a point where he chucks the fake sista out, there and then,”.

What on Earth is a ”fake sista”? In the gay community we have identified these as drag gays, femmes and or transgendered women.

What a cheek! Just the audacity to not even explore and understand the gay community when writing a column on them is atrocious.

Especially from a cisgendered-heterosexual man (gathering from the fact that you mention several times that you are “straight”, whatever that means) .

Second, the writer states that “Ndiqonde ukuba andinakubasayiyeka la ntwana. Ndazixelela ukuba izakuyibuyisa imali yam. I leave the rest to your carnal imagination.”

This perpetuates the prejudice and discrimination that the gay community endures on a daily basis.

It also highlights the stereotypes that they encounter, which stipulates that the queer community is there to satisfy the “carnal” needs of individuals.

Leaving things to the imagination of readers leaves people to make their own judgements, which is unsafe.

Third, the writer continues: “I saw gay men kissing and no longer able to bear the thought of whatever was to follow, I packed it in, gave it a name and called it a night.”

With my encounter and understanding of so-called straight men, if the latter were two heterosexual people or two women kissing, they would to have bear the thought of whatever was to follow, because in the society we live heterosexuality is the norm.

The writer continues to demean the queer community, after proclaiming that its “okay” for two gay men to enjoy their company, in the same light distorts his own sentiment by saying: “But when the reality is a far cry from the expectation, problems are always bound to happen,”.

In his closing statement, the writer makes reference to June 16, where young hopefuls died for the freedom and liberation of this country.

Amongst those who died I mention Simon Nkoli who was a liberation activist and for the emancipation of black queer bodies in this country.

Adam perpetuates homophobia by stating: “I might have to tread carefully, then, so that I save myself the embarrassment of leaving the tavern in the arms of a man in a school skirt.” What the hell does that even mean? So the writer says “…A man who sleeps with a man deserves high respect.” Yet in the same light sees men leaving with other men at a tavern as embarrassing.

What is more alarming and unfortunately disheartening is for the newspaper, City Vision to publish such a homophobic article.

It is quite unfortunate that in 2017, we still witness instances of homophobia and misogyny. Lately, we have witnessed that South African has a high rate of femicide.
