The Magic FC is a development football team that plays in the ABC Motsepe league in the Western Cape. The team is owned by former Bafana player George Dearnaley and coached by another former Bafana player, Gerald Stober.

Last season the team received national attention when they reached the Nedbank Cup last 32 and played against PSL team Platinum Stars.

The match was broadcast live on SABC1 and although the PSL team won 3-0 the amateur team was not disgraced. As many as 17 of the squad of 22 who went up for the match in Rustenburg had never been on an aeroplane before.

The team has also become well known for developing young players and helping them to get professional contracts. Dearnaley and Stober have a lot of contacts in the PSL and in the NFD and combined with their football knowledge and their coaching principles, The Magic FC looks set to become a force in local soccer in the near future.

Tapelo Nyongo from Khayelitsha played for The Mafic for 2 seasons before signing his professional contract with AmaZulu.

Former players who are also now signed with professional teams include Brandon Dean (SuperSport United) and Rodwill Bezuidenhout and Keenan Dickson (both Cape Town All Stars).

Dearnaley says “We believe that there is plenty of talent in the Western Cape, but some of the kids are not developed properly. They need some help and we believe that we can help develop them to become professional players. We have also helped players get scholarships to study and 3 of our other players have also been given opportunities overseas.

“We are called The Magic because we believe that magic can happen if you work hard and if you believe in yourself.”
