A meter taxi driver was shot dead opposite Mtata Lounge in Lwandle in the early hours of Sunday morning (5 May).

The busy Ralarala Street, especially in the evening, is known to be very dangerous for those leaving the establishment in the wee hours.

Mthokozisi Gama, Lwandle police spokesperson, said detectives were working around the clock to trace the suspects involved in the murder.

Gama said the deceased, from Lwandle, was shot by four unknown men when they entered his car around 03:00.

He said: “It is alleged the owner of the white VW Polo, who performs taxi services, had parked in front of the Mtata tavern when four unknown males approached him to transport them to Khasibe tavern.

“The four males jumped into the car, but before the car moved off the passengers got involved in an argument.

At that point, the driver related, four gunshots went off at the back of his vehicle.

Three suspects jumped from the car and ran away leaving the victim behind,” said Gama. The suspects took a cellphone and an undisclosed amount of money from the driver.

Gama said crime experts were called to the scene to comb it for evidence.

He said a murder case was opened, but no arrests had yet been made.

“The 35-year-old deceased was pronounced dead at the crime scene by ambulance personnel, and his body was later transported to Tygerberg mortuary for a post-mortem,” Gama said.

He said police were requesting anyone who may have witnessed or seen the suspect to contact Lwandle police detective Constable Mfundo Soyiyo on 021 845 2060, as he is eager to arrest the suspects involved.

He said police will offer a reward to anyone who comes with positive information that will lead to the arrest of the suspects.
