Mbekweni to stage jazz revival

2017-10-26 06:00

Ikapa Jazz Movement (IJM), an affiliate of the South African Jazz Appreciators Associaition, will be heading to Mbekweni this Saturday, 28th October in support of the Paarl Jazz Foundation .

The event will be held at the Mbekweni Community Hall from 6pm at R80 per head.

All jazz lovers and IJM supporters and followers from Cape Town and surrounding areas are invited to join the do in their numbers.

Paarl Jazz Foundation has been keeping the genre alive and cooking among its members and the wider community.

Under their stewardship, a hot youth band has emerged providing backing to a few rising singers.

It is hoped that these efforts of re-establishing jazz in Mbekweni and beyond will rekindle the great spirit of the genre of the 60s, 70’s and early 80’s.

Thanks to people such as Bavuma Sondlo, the current chairman and his team, whose leadership plays a huge role in bringing out big crowds at their events.

The jazz baton was passed on from a founding team led by jazz enthusiast Phindile Maxam, who held the position for a few years.

The Sammy’s Band, led by the late Mokhele brothers, the Hot Six Jazz Combo, led by the late great pianist Shepherd Sibeko and many others, will be remembered as the forerunners who set the township alight with their sweet Jazz sounds.

One of the female singers of that period Nomvula “Pickey” Manjo recently passed on.

We salute her never-say-die spirit as fgar asb jazz is concerned and for the legacy her peers left behind for this generation.
