A new campaign called Unemployed Middle-Aged Citizens was inaugurated in Langa this past Saturday.

It aims to address unemployment issues among the group.

Phumeza Mtimkhulu (38), who is the brains behind the campaign, said the organisation is created for unemployed middle aged citizens.

She said the group feels that they are being neglected by the government.

“We are made to feel like invalids in our own country, we are not hired due to age discrimination,” she said.

Mtimkhulu said they have decided to stand up and make it known to the powers that be that they too can see the injustice and unfairness of the country’s policies and the employment equity act, which is not equal.

“We tired of being comfortable with our situation, we (are) tired of settling to be reduced to this. We refuse to allow the government to strip us of our dignity like this,” she said.

Mtimkhulu said as citizens of this country, they also have a right to all the privileges that are enjoyed by others.

She said politicians only know them when they need their votes and that they are sick and tired of being used.

Siyabulela Lumkwana (43) from Khayelitsha said the reason he decided to join the campaign was because he is not getting work and that government is not doing anything about it.

“We will not vote if we are not getting jobs because we have families to feed,” he said.
