More cameras needed

In an effort to fight crime in Khayelitsha more CCTV cameras will be installed. Currently the area has City of Cape Town cameras, but Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) wants more and hopes to install additional 45 cameras “soon”.

However, the problem is money.

The initiative is expected to cost around R25 million.

In terms of the plan, the cameras will be at all exits and entrances to Khayelitsha and will have a licence plate recognition (LPR) system. There will also be three thermal cameras to detect fires. Others will be installed on main roads.

During a presentation held at the Khayelitsha Training Centre on Wednesday 28 August the KDF said it wants the cameras to be operated from a local control room by well trained individuals. The presentation was attended by various businesses from the community and the police.

KDF chairperson Ndithini Tyhido said the project is called “Uyabonwa” meaning you are being seen. He said by installing more cameras in the community it is their way of fighting crime. He said that he understands that cameras alone will not end crime but they hope to mobilise the community.

Tyhido appealed for financial support to get the project off the ground. “We are calling on government and businesses to help us financially,” he said. He said big businesses that operate in the area will benefit because there will be a system that will prevent their vehicles from being hijacked. Since there are cameras that belong to the City talks about building a partnership will be organised.

Tyhido added that they have also asked the police to work with them since they are the ones authorised to make arrests.
