Mpendulo Mabindisa is a young film director from Khayelitsha who is poised to take over in the music industry with his cutting edge visuals.

Mabindisa, Site B, recently announced his presence after shooting a video titled Celebrity for rapper Reason.

The 25 year old has so far received rave reviews with his cutting edge imagery.

“It was a big opportunity that I had to grab with both hands and I am pleased that not only Reason but his fans loved the video as well.

After it was first aired on Channel O messages started pouring in on social media and you know people on twitter can be savage, so it was great to see nothing but positive reactions about the video,” he said.

Mabindisa who also goes by the name Motion Billy said that he got the opportunity when Reason was visiting the City earlier this year, looking for an upstart music director to shoot his video.

“We met and I showed him some of the work that I did in the past and was pleasantly surprised when he got back to me and told me what he loved about my videos.

I then sent him a rough idea of what his video would look like and he was happy, so he came back to Cape Town to shoot it,” Mabindisa said.

Mabindisa recently moved to Johannesburg after obtaining his Film Diploma from the Cape Peninsula University of Cape Town.

He said that he was excited that he had started to receive enquiries from other artists ad he is finally getting recognition for his work.

“After matric I went on to study sound engineering at Damelin College and one of the modules was about motion pictures and I just fell in love with it.

It was different from what I was learning and thought it was my calling. I remember when I was looking for internship work in sound engineering, I was struggling until someone recommended the Media Film Services where I offered my services without remuneration,” he added.

Media Film Services is an equipment rental services, facilities and studios company based in Paarden Eiland.

“While working there I started doing music videos for local artist and most times it was for free. A year into the job I was offered a paying position but I had already decided that I was going to film school. Its hard for people who come from disadvantaged areas like me to make it in this industry, so I knew that I needed to get a solid foundation by getting formal education,”

Mabindisa spent the next four years making videos for artists like Rattex, Driemanskap, Khanyi, Amilca and Phoenix, and has now become the go-to-guy for local artists..

“ It was a difficult time because most of the videos were not paid for and artists are very difficult to work with and at the beginning I used to be very angry at them.

Now I’m all about happiness and peace. I’m a bit nervous about the future, but I’m looking forward to it,” Mabindisa explained.

He said that he has started working on documentaries and he wants to move on to short films and eventually movies.

He also said that he hopes that his story will inspire other young film makers.
