Motorists urged to check discs

2018-04-19 06:00

Vehicle owners whose motor vehicle licences expired on Saturday 31 March are urged to renew their licences, despite not receiving renewal notifications.

The notices were not dispatched, a statement from the provincial Department of Transport and Public Works confirmed.

“The matter was investigated and the cause addressed. The implication, however, is that vehicle owners whose motor vehicle licences expired on 31 March did not receive notification of the expiry,” said departmental spokesperson Jandré Bakkes.

“These individuals are encouraged to pay their licence renewal fees by no later than Monday 23 April to avoid any penalties. The department has been assured that the notices for licences expiring at the end of April have been dispatched.”

Bakkes implored all vehicle owners to regularly check when their motor vehicle licences expire to avoid late renewal and any related penalties.

According to a statement from the City of Cape Town, the notices were not printed and posted by the Road Traffic Management Corporation.

“Although this situation is outside of our control, we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience,” it read.

“We advise that it is possible that the licence renewal process may take a few minutes longer due to the renewal notices not having been sent.

Members of the public can also renew their licences online via www.capetown.gov.za/vehiclelicensing to register and make their payments.”

Proof of residence and a copy of the ID of the vehicle owner are required when applying for renewals.

These documents can be scanned and sent as an attachment if the application is completed online.
