ANC MP Thandi Mahambehlala turned 44 years old on Monday, but instead of celebrating the big day with comrades, family and friends, she chose to donate blankets to senior citizens and gave groceries to four destitute families in Samora Machel.

The event took place at the offices of the Catholic welfare and Development centre in the area.

Mahambehlala said she grew up in the area around Samora Machel, and that nothing could have pleased her more than giving the elderly and the needy.

“I decided it would be nice to make a difference to the lives of the needy in the area.”

“I’d normally gather comrades and friends to celebrate my birthday, but this year I thought it would be nice if I make a contribution in changing other people’s lives. I am sharing my salary with the needy in my community. I approached the councillor (Sithembiso Mzobe), the South African National Civic Organisation(Sanco) and the elderly structures to identify the beneficiaries. The families have no source of income,” she added.

Mahambehlala said the other reason she involved the local councillor, was so that the needy families do not go hungry once the food is over.

“But there is sustainability by ensuring that they are registered for social grants,” she said.

She said she is hoping to “make the donations bigger” next year. For Nontsuku Newu, 50, who received groceries, this was not the first time that the politician had come to her aid.

Last year, Mahambehlala helped bury her daughter Ncumisa Newu,26, after she was knocked to death by a speeding car.

Sobbing, Newu said: “I am very happy... Thandi helped bury my daughter who was knocked by a car last year, just as I was planning to sell the house, because I did not have the means to bury her.”
