Murder accused out on bail

Aman who allegedly confessed to the murder of another last week has been released on R1 000 bail.

Mandlenkosi Hulane (33) appeared briefly in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on a murder charge last Friday, 18 January. The state did not oppose bail.

Last week, Lwandle police said Hulane had confessed to the murder of the 32-year-old man (“Man confesses to murder in Asanda”, City Vision, 17 January).

Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama said the fatal stabbing took place in Celiwe Street, Asanda Village at 02:46.

“Police were called to the scene after a 32-year-old man was stabbed to death after an argument with the suspect,” he said in a statement.

“When the officers arrived on the scene, the victim was found lying in a pool of blood with a stab wound to his chest. They also found the knife used to kill him lying next to him.”

Paramedics arrived on the scene and the victim was pronounced dead there, Gama added.

Reading an affidavit by his client in court on Friday, state-appointed lawyer Nicholas Smuts indicated he was employed as a labourer and could afford to post R1 000 for bail.

He further indicated his client would plead not guilty to the charge of murder, a schedule 5 offence.

Smuts also said Hulane had no previous convictions and would not “endanger witnesses”.

When asked by Magistrate Karen Scheepers if he understood the contents of the affidavit, Hulane confirmed by saying, “I do.” He also pleaded not guilty.

It is unclear why the accused, after an alleged confession, decided to plead not guilty.

The state prosecutor informed the court that the post-mortem results were still outstanding and the investigation was still ongoing.

Hulane was granted bail and the case was postponed to Friday 3 April for further investigation.
