Members of the newly rejuvenated Nyanga Development Forum(NDF) has been granted leadership certificates over the weekend.

City of Cape Town’s Mayco member for Area Central, Siyabulela Mamkeli and local Ward Councillor Luyanda Nyingwa handed out these awards.

This after the 16 members have undergone a one month training course conducted by Umtha Strategy Planning and Development Consultants.

This was a programme under the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme (MURP) with the aim to up-skill members of the forum before they take on the task of running the organisation.

Dumisani Ncapayi, a community development worker at MURP, said that the forum included members from different spheres within the community and that it was pivotal to give them the expertise to drive the forum’s success.

“In the forum, we have people from the religious communities, professionals, business people, including people from the sports, arts and cultural fraternity, the disabled as well as the elderly.

Some of the key components of the course are leadership, conflict resolution, business plan formation as well as fund-raising.

The key is to make the forum self sustainable by giving them these skills,” he said.

The programme ran from 14 October to 10 November 2017, and Councillor Mamkeli said he was hoping that the course will mean that the NDF will be a forum that he can work with productively.

“We are currently working on a number of projects that need to be concluded and it is important that the forum works well within the community,” he said.

Nomzi Gxothelwa, NDF deputy chairperson, said that the training was vital and it was good that the City provided key skills to empower the forum.

“I am happy to see that this initiative has had the support of not just the City, but the councillors as well.

We must now make sure that sufficient resources are provided in our areas and that the leaders can use them effectively to uplife our communities.

We don’t want to have poor leaders who will benefit unduly. We are happy and may this bring much needed economic development in our area,” she added.
