Neglected kids at risk of abuse

With the festive season coming to an end, Nyanga police have been left with many cases they believe would have been avoided if parents had not neglected their children.

Nyanga SAPS spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi told City Vision that a number of rape cases were reported to the police during the festive season.

“We have noticed liquor as a contributing factor in most incidents and in some cases child neglect; where mothers would leave a child alone at home for the whole night or with an uncaring neighbour or unattended at all,” she said.

She said that some mothers leave home at night or early morning to visit boyfriends, taking lifts in the early hours of the morning and they become victims on the way.

“We appeal to women to always leave early for their destinations, not to abuse liquor and be always alert at all times.

Always keep doors locked because some people become victims during house robberies.

Parents must always leave their children with people they trust and always build an open relationship with children to make it easy for them to communicate. Let us work together for the safety of women and children,” said.

. Meanwhile, on Sunday two men were arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“At about 01:20 our members were busy with patrols when they spotted three unknown men running with a blue bag in New Eisleben Road in Browns Farm.

The members chased them, they found a shotgun and a live round in possession of a 20 year old man,” said Sitshitshi.

The man was arrested. The arrest follows another arrest of Saturday night where a 38 year old man was also caught with an illegal firearm.

“Members were also on patrol in Unathi, Crossroads when they saw a man hiding a suspicious item looking like a firearm underneath his T-shirt. The members searched the suspect and found a firearm (7.5 9mm) and 15 live rounds underneath the T-shirt,” she said.

“He was also immediately arrested and is in custody. Both suspects appeared in Athlone Magistrate Court for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
