A bold plan to have a competitive environment for amateur boxers has given birth to the launch of Western Cape Boxing League (WCBL).

WCBL was launched last week in the city and will see the first round of its fights taking place at the Claremont Community Hall on Saturday March 31.

According to Dorothy Cloete, the Western Cape Open Boxing Organisation( WCOBO) took a decision to introduce an inter-club competition known as the WCBL to “nurture talent”.

“ The tournament will also be used as a platform for the selection committee to spot talented boxers. WCOBO further engaged private individuals and companies to sponsor certain aspects by ensuring that the league becomes a success,”she said.

The tournament will be contested only by elite boxers as a pilot project in the following format:

. Boxers will be entered by clubs from all over the Western Cape;

. A draw will be done per wait category prior to the official weigh-in;

. A log will be created to monitor and report online on a monthly basis;

. A point system will be utilised to rank the boxers on the log;

These WCBL Competition Rules apply to the Western Cape Boxing League and are the only WCBL Competition for which Western Cape boxing members, clubs and boxing family must follow and respect in all their competitions in accordance to activities at all levels.

“We have about 80 boxers who entered the league from all over the Western Cape.I have added some pics of fighters of the league,” she said. The league will run on a knock-out system over a period of 10 Months.
