The Western Cape Department of Human Settlements on Saturday held a meeting in Langa, Cape Town to elect a new project steering committee.

It will be part of the Joe Slovo housing development project.

The project has been delayed by violence and infighting sparked by the community's dissatisfaction with the previous committee.

The steering committee is a bridge between housing authorities and the community.

Their main responsibility is to represent the community and ensure their needs are met.

The department of human settlements and the housing development agency have in the past year made several attempts to co-ordinate a transparent election for a new committee.

Thando Mguli, head of Western Cape Human Settlements, vowed to resolve any issues which could affect the housing project.

He also promised to ensure the project’s beneficiaries are represented properly.

“The purpose of this meeting is to elect of a new committee that will work directly with the community of Joe Slovo.

“We can finally say we nowhave a new steering committee for the Joe Slovo project.”

The community welcomed all the conditions and criteria for membership of the new committee. Members of the previous committee were also at the meeting.

Although one of the former members was re-nominated, he declined the offer.
